Cleveland State University has embarked on a significant renovation of two of its historic buildings, Fenn Tower and Fenn Hall, according to the university's announcement. These refurbishments are part of the Cleveland State United plan, which aims to enhance the institution's academic prowess and contribute to the economic development of Northeast Ohio. As stated in CSU's news release, the chair of CSU's Board of Trustees, Tim Cosgrove, expressed his personal connection to the university, "This University changed my life, and it is a privilege to help enrich the lives of current and future students – the renovations of Fenn Hall and Fenn Tower will do that for years to come."
Fenn Hall is set to undergo a transformation into the Biomedical Discovery Complex in a two-phase project, starting with the creation of over 20,000 square feet of research lab space. This new facility, with a budget secured at $32 million, looks to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration in the STEM fields. Dr. Nigamanth Sridhar, CSU senior vice president and provost, detailed the project's aspirations in the CSU's press release, stating, "We are designing the labs to be future-focused interdisciplinary community spaces where researchers, both students and faculty, from across disciplines can collaborate, teach and explore innovations in science, medicine and engineering." Construction for Phase I is slated to commence in the summer of 2026, with a completion date in early 2028.
The university's Fenn Tower, a landmark since 1930, is undergoing renovations as well, aiming to reopen in August 2026 as a state-of-the-art residence hall catering to first-year students. The upgrades will include modernized student rooms, redesigned communal spaces, and reinforced infrastructure. CSU President Dr. Laura Bloomberg emphasized the dual significance of the project in a statement obtained by the CSU's news team, "Fenn Tower holds a special place in the history of Cleveland State, and the City of Cleveland. Its renovation represents both respect for our history and excitement for our future." The overhaul seems set to balance the historical integrity of the tower with modern living accommodations for 400 students.
In addition to functional improvements, Fenn Tower will see the restoration of its first-floor lobby and the addition of amenities such as student lounges, study areas, and recreational spaces like a movie theatre and game room. All these enhancements focus on supporting the academic progression and social integration of residents. Reminiscing about his time at Fenn Tower, Tim Cosgrove acknowledged the building's historic impression in a statement to CSU's news platform, "I remember going to history class on the fourth floor of Fenn Tower with Dr. Holmes, an experience that remains unforgettable. We are fortunate to be able to steward this iconic building so future generations can be inspired by its historic significance as well as its beautiful views of the city and Lake Erie."
